Do you ever wonder what it would be like to host your own talk-show? I’m a big fan of Anthony Bourdain and frequently dream about what it would be like to have his job or host my own show. For me this might not be a smart idea but for you and your church or organization it could be a real benefit. Today it seems like anyone can dream up their own talk show, build an audience, and chitchat or small talk their way to daytime or late night fame and fortune. All you need is some content and a camera. That’s where Blab.IM comes in.
Blab.IM is an awesome new app! It works very similar to Periscope except with one benefit, all streams are Public. With Periscope when you started to stream to your feed only your followers would the get the notification and see the video feed, not so with Blab.IM. With Blab.IM your video streams are open to the public and anyone can view your video feed, very similar to how video uploads to YouTube can be seen by anyone searching for content.
As you stream your content the user then opens your stream and follows you. At any point during your stream if any user wants to chat with you all they have to do is message you using a handy built-in messenger on the right side of the screen. Users and followers can also chat with you via their own video feed (if you approve them) as well, making the experience very exciting and interactive.
It serves as a very handy way to video-host podcasts and post event interviews with celebrities, but you could easily use this to stream worship services, Bible studies, town hall meetings and announcements. With the level of interaction that followers and users can have, though, it would take a person regulating the feed during those events. So it isn’t totally “set it and forget it.”
Blab.IM is currently available for iOS (iPhone) and as a web app with no mention of an Android (pretty much all non-Apple phones) development for the near future.
Here is a nice infographic that helps explain Blab.IM for those of us that are more visual readers. Hey, magazines are just picture books for grownups right?
