Carrots and Christmas

What do carrots have to do with Christmas? First watch this…and if you want to skip to the really cool part, fast forward to 4:00 to see the final product.

I don’t know about you, but I found that IMPRESSIVE and completely unexpected.

If someone walked up to me and said that I could make my own clarinet…out of a carrot…I would be pretty skeptical. It seems impossible to make anything as complicated as a clarinet, out of a dirty root. At what point did Linsey look at a carrot and think to himself, “Hmmm…that would make a great musical instrument!”

We know carrots are nutritious and are good for our eyes, but other than that, they aren’t exactly glamorous. These veggies grown under the earth and unseen until harvested. Then they have to be washed and peeled because they are simply covered in dirt. Not a pretty veggie.

Well, what do carrots have to do with Christmas? Check this out…

“Therefore the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel.” Isaiah 7:14

Nope. Not possible. Even Mary said this wasn’t possible. (And I remember health class…and that’s sooooo not what I was taught about reproduction!)

You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus...“How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?” -Luke 1:31,34

But it happened.

But {Joseph} did not consummate their marriage until {Mary} gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus. -Matthew 1:25

God is all about the unexpected and impossible. He took two simple people, to do something extraordinary.

Perhaps you see yourself as nothing special. You say to yourself, “I’m not ____________. What can God do with me?”

carrotY’all…a man made a clarinet out of a carrot, simply because he could. The result is beautiful music from an unexpected place!

How much more will God do through you, simply because He can?!

I can’t imagine Mary and Joseph thought of themselves as anything special.

Yet, the child growing within this teenage girl would is the one to wash us clean and peel back the layers of sin to give us hearts of flesh.

So, keep a look out for opportunities for you to be God’s instrument…

Lend a hand where you can, give a little extra to those in need, pray for those whom you call your enemy, invite others to meet Jesus, smile at someone when what you really want to do is yell, show grace, give second chances, plan something special with your family…maybe you even make a carrot clarinet together…just because you can.

How will you celebrate the impossible this Christmas? How do you celebrate the birth of our Savior? I would love to hear from you!

  1. Heather, you always amaze me. What a beautiful spiritual lesson you pulled from this video.Thank you for reminding us we follow THE God of the impossible!! God has used our family in the post week to help a family in our neighborhood in great need, and It was such a blessing to be use as a vessel for Jehovah Jireh. Truly the best gift I will receive this Christmas.

    Love you,

  2. we all come from dirt. God took that dirt and made man. God made us His. but our humanness brought us into sin and made us dirty objects that belong under ground. like the carrot. but God didn’t want us to stay there underground in the dark dirty. He sent His Son to pull us out into the light and bath us in his forgiving redeeming blood. made beautiful and strong to do God’s will. as Christians this is our hope why we believe. and it is awesome! we are so loved! thanks be to God
