New Year…New Heart

If you are joining me today from my guest post on Wendy Blight’s blog, welcome!  Feel free to make yourself at home and look around.  Leave a comment and let me know you came to visit.  I’d love to hear from you!  Thank you Wendy for the opportunity to be a guest on Living Truth! Happy New Year to everyone, and if I missed you this Christmas season, Merry Christmas too!

My husband and I were thrilled to say goodbye to 2011, it was a rough one for us in so many ways.  From losing our first child to miscarriage and my step-mother to suicide in the same week, to other heartaches which probably only 14 people in the whole world even know about.  Oh, we have had many blessings as well; healing in ways I never knew possible, a marriage stronger now than when we began, and new possibilities.  If we let the heartaches blur our vision it can be a challenge for us to recognize the blessings God provides.

This year will be different.  Perhaps 2012 will have the same amount of heartaches and trials, but it will still be different, it will be better.  This year, my focus is not the condition of my life which so often changes from one moment to the next…but the condition of my heart. “Create in me a clean heart O God and renew a right spirit within me” Psalm 51:10.  This is my verse for the year and it goes hand in hand with my resolution for 2012. To give Him 6:00-7:00am each day, spending quality time with my Creator each day.  I could make all sorts of resolutions to help me be a “better person;” be more compassionate, give more money away, help more people in need, call my parents and siblings more often, write more thank you notes, and so many other options.  However, if my heart isn’t focused on the right place, nothing I do will be worth anything.  First Corinthians 13:1-3 reminds us that:

If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing.”

So, I ask God would take my heart and make it new.  That He would soften my hard heart to His Word and to the people I encounter each day.  Help me to recognize His blessings, even if they come in the form of a trial.

What’s your resolution this year?  Better yet, have you chosen a verse to guide you for 2012?  I would love for you to share!

My old Quiet Time space...

  1. Happy new year Heather! 2011 was indeed a very trying year and while I know that this year will probably come with challenges I have hope in God’s ability to see me through it all better and stronger. I praise God continually for y’ll sisters in the Lord, that I get to learn from and get encouraged by your struggles and successes, God brought y’ll just when my faith was floundering and I didn’t know what to do. I am praying for more insight from God for you and I know that our fellowship will wax on stronger than before.
I am not good with resolutions but I do have a verse for this new year. It is Eph 1: 19 “And [so that you can know and understand] what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, as demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength”. I am focusing alot on my relationship with God and others this year and relying on God’s power to work out great things in my life.
Congrats on your new bible study space!

  2. Agree 100% with the desire to focus on the condition of my heart, and build my relationship with the lord above all. I will be praying for your new year and ask that you keep me in yours as well. For some reason all i can think of when i was reading your post was the song “turn your eyes upon jesus, look full in his wonderful face and the things of earth will grow will grow strangely dim in the light of his glory and grace.” May we both find new depth to our relationship with Jesus, and peace deep in our soul. Amen.

  3. How I agree with you and the girls Heather! I am so excited for the gift of living 2012 with you girls as we all seek our Abba above all. Psalm 119:10-11 is my guide for the year, “I seek you with all my heart; do not let me stray from your commands. I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you.” If that is on target, everything else- good or bad- will fall into place. I love you Heather. You bless me with your Christ-centered teaching and even more with your friendship and sisterhood. Oh… and tell Daniel that I got teary-eyed seeing your quiet time space 🙂

    1. I just love your verse for the year Noelle! I’ll definitely tell Daniel that you like my new Quiet Time space. People kinda chuckle when I tell them that my favorite gift at Christmas is my new desk, but it has really meant a lot to me to have a comfy place to spend time with my Jesus in the morning.

      ❤ Heather

  4. I love your quiet space. 🙂

I’ve never had a verse or word for the year. And right now, God is changing and doing things in my life almost daily, I have decided to have a monthly verse and word. Jeremiah 29:11 is my verse and beautiful is my word.

    Thank you for sharing TAPP.

    1. It’s sooooo comforting to know that He knows what’s going on in our lives and He has a plan for everything! I’m excited to hear how God is moving in your life this year. Thanks by the way for proofing my post, you are AWESOME! I love you girl!

      ❤ Heather

  5. I have started a quite time, mine is after I take my girls to school from 8-9, I need to change my location because its at my desk and internet is to tempting.I’m going to try the back porch.God has me starting a small group and I’ve been seeking him on when and he gave me this verse this morning, Jer. 1:17a “Get yourself ready, stand up and say whatever I comand you. “

    1. Peggy,

I understand how distracting the internet can be at times. My internet is just on my phone, but even then, it can be so tempting to just “check” on FB, Twitter, emails, or check the latest football scores. My check-in tends to end up taking 30 minutes or more. I hope that your new place on the porch will work out for you!

      ❤ Heather

  6. What a wonderful New Year Resolution idea! Your T.A.P.P. for 2012 is so apropro…as I whispered to the Lord on New Year’s Day…”I miss being with You”. Tragedy struck on Dec. 23rd when my husband lost a second brother, the rock of the family and the caregiver of my Mother-in-law who suffers from dementia at 93 yrs. Instantly our lives have been changed forever and uncertainty among what was once a family of five, now down to three siblings, is weighing very heavily on what the future holds. But like yourself Heather, I am a woman of faith who strongly believes that His strength is perfect when our strength is gone. Needless to say, it is imperative that I too follow this plan so that God’s grace will be ever present as we move forward. I know it will not be easy because I am a full-time student too, but again, making God our priority is more important than anything else!

    1. Stephanie,

My heart goes out to your family, especially your husband as he mourns the loss of his brother. I pray that the God of comfort and peace, will also be your fortress and rock. May He strengthen you and yours through out this year, drawing you close to Him! Good luck in school as well!

      ❤ Heather

  7. That.k you so much for the devotion on Miss Wendy’s page! I found it to be an eye opener for me! For the past years, I have been longing to have an intimate relationship with God but I would procrastinate and make excuses….I am a single mother with 5 children and I want them to know that we need God not just on Sundays but everyday so i need to set an example for them! I feel the same about spending time with God. again thank you so much and may God continue to bless you!!
