Don’t Get Duped!

I heard something when I was in middle school about how men and women are trained to recognize counterfeit money.  Now I assumed they were shown different kinds of counterfeit bills so they would know what to look for, but that wasn’t the case; instead they were given real money to examine.

They take in how the bills feel, that unique texture money has.  It’s size and shape.  The particular shade of green we use.  How it looks when held up to the light.  If they’re really brave, they even check out it’s smell…which is definitely unique!

Once they memorize how REAL money looks and feels, it’s much easier for them to spot a fake bill a mile away.

You’ve probably already figured out where I’m going with this, but let’s go to God’s Word…

{Jesus said,} “If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free.”  ~John 8:32b-33

All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.  ~II Timothy 3:16-17

Right here, God is giving us the tool to use in order to cut through the lies Satan places at our feet.  Did you catch it?  It’s God’s Word expressed to us through Scripture and the life of Jesus Christ.  When we draw close to His Word and seek His Truth…the lies of the devil stick out like sore thumbs, sending up red flags that are much easier to see in the midst of a sea of grey.

The devil is crafty and has had extensive experience convincing us to believe in his poo and let’s face it, when left to our own devices, we easily fall into his web of deceit.  God knows this and desires more for His children.  He provides us with armor to defend ourselves, but He also gives us our one offensive weapon.

Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.          ~Ephesians 6:17

We don’t have to spend all of our energy trying to figure out if what we’re facing is a lie.  By the power of the Holy Spirit and a growing understanding of God’s will through the continual study of His Word, that lie is just not going to look or feel right!  The more we engulf our hearts and minds in His Word, the easier it will be to recognize those lies.  We can’t simply learn something once and hope it’ll stick forever.  Each year I take a CPR class, thankfully I have never needed to use that skill, I retake the class every year to make sure I never forget!

For the word of God is alive and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.    ~Hebrews 4:12

God’s Word is alive and active!  It’s true that it never changes, but we do and so does our understanding of His Word.  What you didn’t grasp as a child, makes sense now as an adult.  The interpersonal relationships expressed in Scripture may not have clicked in your head until you were married, had kids, or experienced that type of relationship first hand.  As we grow and mature, Satan’s tactics change to fit our “needs”, so we can’t give up reading God’s Word and expect to be able to stand up against his lies!

How are you growing in the Word each day?  Do have a time set aside to dive into His Word?  Do you arm yourself with the armor God has provided or do you trust in your own strength and knowledge to defend you in battle?

In my next few posts, we will be taking a close look at each piece of our armor, sometimes I will combine the pieces in a post, while others will get their own space.  School is starting this Wednesday, so please don’t expect these posts to come in regular intervals!
